About
Akila is passionate about enabling people to experience their full potential irrespective of their ability or background. She believes that every life has a special purpose and once that purpose is discovered one is aligned with that purpose, nothing is impossible. She discovered her life’s purpose 20 years ago when her son was diagnosed with multiple disabilities including Autism, ADHD and Apraxia. She quit her successful international career in Software and trained herself as an educator and psychologist to help her son and those like him.
She is a thought leader in the area of Disability and Inclusion and has created unique concepts and programs which have benefited countless families, children and persons with Disabilities[PWD]. Some of the programs include Adventure camps for PWD, Art for Autism Festivals and more recently the Indian Congresses for PWD. In order to foster Inclusion, she has partnered with many mainstream organization to create innovative initiatives .. some worth a mention is Sensory Motor Integration in the Learning Environment [SMILE] in Preschools, Inclusive Living and Care for PWD with Senior care, Sensory friendly Cinema and Autism friendly shopping experiences to the PWD. She has been a catalyst in creating a strong vibrant community of such individuals and their families and create a matrix of support in for them.
Akila along with a few parents founded the Autism Society of India in 2006 an NGO with a pan India focus, based out of Bangalore which works on advocacy and awareness for the rights and services for those affected by Autism. In 2012 when she felt the need for a skill training institute for her son and those like him she set up The Amaze Charitable Trust, an NGO based out of Coimbatore, focused on helping families navigate the Autism maze through skill training programs and capacity building.
Akila is a Master trainer, Facilitator and an Invited Speaker at numerous conferences and symposiums and for a number of Workshops and Training programs in the area of Disability Education and Management across the country.
Akila and her husband Sriram decided to realign their lives around the needs of their children and started working on themselves to redefine paradigms they held about success and life. They trained themselves in Human process work through The Aastha foundation for Human Learning an NGO focused on human process work and facilitation. Through their endeavor Antara - ‘The Space Within’ they work towards parent and caregiver wellbeing including counselling and helping individuals experience their potential and create a roadmap for their life.
Akila loves technology, reading, poetry, writing, nature, travel, adventure and has travelled across India and the world. She lives in Coimbatore, TN with her husband, two children and parents since 2009.
